My Drawing Gear & Materials
Mechanical Pencils
I will use mechanical pencils in my demonstrations. Here are my favorites:
Graphite Refills
I use Staedtler brand exclusively. Over time I have tried other brands and found that Staedtler makes what I believe to be the finest product with the best quality control:
Staedtler Mars Micro Carbon HB or similar hardness / be sure to select the size that matches your mechanical pencil (0.7mm or 1.3mm)
Colored Pencils
Some people find it helpful to use red and blue colored pencils in addition to graphite when drawing linear perspective. I will demonstrate this approach during class:
Red colored pencil (any brand)
Blue colored pencil (any brand)
Top to bottom: Caran d'Ache 844 Metal Mechanical Pencil 0.7mm, Staedtler Mechanical Pencil 1.3mm, and graphite refills to fit the mechanical pencils
Erasers
Erasers can be used for erasing, refining values, and even as drawing tools (for making light marks). Here is what I use:
Kneaded eraser — General’s Kneaded Rubber Eraser
Retractable eraser — Tombow Mono Zero Elastomer Eraser with round tip
Rechargeable eraser — Afmat Rechargeable Electric Eraser
Left to right: kneaded eraser, retractable eraser, and rechargeable eraser
Pens
I will be demonstrating pens as part of this online class. Here are the kinds I use:
Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pen / black archival ink / in sizes XS, S and F
Sakura Pigma Micron Pen / black archival ink / in sizes 01, 03 and 05
Top to bottom: Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen, and Sakura Sigma Micron Pen
Paper
Quality, heavier-weight paper is key to an enjoyable drawing experience and better finished drawing. Here is what I will be using in class:
Strathmore Series 400 Drawing Pad / 130gm (80lb.) / 24 sheets in various sizes / or Strathmore Series 400 Recycled Drawing Pad / 130gm (80lb.) / 24 sheets in various sizes
I will be using the 9” x 12” size in class
Strathmore Series 400 Drawing Pads, regular (brown cover) and recycled (green cover)
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I’ll see you online for class.
Thank you!
