Online Class
Drawing from the Heart
Suggested Gear & Materials
You are welcome to use any pencil, paper and other gear and materials you like. That said, for those interested, below is a listing of the gear and materials that I will be using in the online class.
My Drawing Gear & Materials
Mechanical Pencils
I will use mechanical pencils in my demonstrations. Here are my favorites:
Graphite Refills
I use Staedtler brand exclusively. Over time I have tried other brands and found that Staedtler makes what I believe to be the finest product with the best quality control:
Top to bottom: Caran d'Ache 844 Metal Mechanical Pencil 0.7mm, Staedtler Mechanical Pencil 1.3mm, and graphite refills to fit the mechanical pencils
Erasers
Erasers can be used for erasing, refining values, and even as drawing tools (for making light marks). Here is what I use:
Kneaded eraser — General’s Kneaded Rubber Eraser
Retractable eraser — Tombow Mono Zero Elastomer Eraser with round tip
Rechargeable eraser — Afmat Rechargeable Electric Eraser (this replaces the now unavailable Sakura Battery Operated Eraser used in the online class recording - the Afmat is an even better eraser)
Left to right: kneaded eraser, retractable eraser, and battery-operated eraser
Pens
We will NOT be using pens as part of this online class. That said, when I draw with pens, here are the kinds I use:
Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pen / black archival ink / in sizes XS, S and F
Sakura Pigma Micron Pen / black archival ink / in sizes 01, 03 and 05
Top to bottom: Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen, and Sakura Sigma Micron Pen
Paper
Quality, heavier-weight paper is key to an enjoyable drawing experience and better finished drawing. Here is what I will be using in class:
Strathmore Series 400 Drawing Pad / 130gm (80lb.) / 24 sheets in various sizes / or Strathmore Series 400 Recycled Drawing Pad / 130gm (80lb.) / 24 sheets in various sizes
I will be using the 9” x 12” size in class
Strathmore Series 400 Drawing Pads, regular (brown cover) and recycled (green cover)
Other Items
Masonite board - to provide a solid surface to draw on
Metal clips - to attach the drawing pad or loose sheets of paper to the board
Blending stump - I use this occasionally to blur edges / any brand is fine
Small brush - I use a compact makeup brush to brush away any excess graphite or eraser shavings
Small microfiber towel - to rest my hand on so I don’t smudge the drawing
Small pouch to hold drawing materials / any type or brand is fine (not shown in image below)

Where to Purchase
Most of the above above materials can be found at your local art supply store, or online art supply stores, or on Amazon.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I’ll see you online for class.
Thank you!
